A Fair Ultimatum

If you can

allow yourself

to love me baby

I’ll hold you,

rock you,

Love you through every night

If you’re not scared to

show me baby

I’ll do my very best

to make it

all right

But I feel you haven’t

let go baby

And it’s not really all

about me

You have to let your feelings

show baby

You have to love me

or let me

be free

  1. The last four lines are devastating in the quietest possible way. You have to love me or let me be free. Not an ultimatum born from anger. A boundary born from self respect. The kind that takes years to find the courage to say out loud. The kind that costs something even as you say it because part of you is still hoping they will choose to stay.

There is a whole relationship living inside these few lines. The patience. The hope. The slow realisation. The moment you finally admit that waiting for someone to arrive emotionally is its own kind of loneliness.

Kait has always known how to say the hard thing simply. And simple is always the hardest thing to write.

The bravest thing you can say to someone you love is this. Choose me fully or release me completely. There is no dignity in the in between.
