Our monsters don’t look

like monsters

There is no way to tell

If they’ll share a slice of Heaven

or bring the hate of Hell

They don’t all have dangerous killer looks

they are not all uneducated and despise books

Look at Ted, a prime example

of a learned man who was extremely harmful

Ted Bundy, yes

he was an educated man

but not smart enough

to avoid the hang man

Then there’s really insane

Like Mr Ed Gein

who danced in the moonlight with his mother’s skin on his face

  1. Our monsters do not look like monsters. Six words that dismantle every assumption we were ever given about how to recognise danger. We were handed a picture of what evil looks like and spent our lives looking for that picture while the real thing walked right past us in a suit and a smile.

    What makes this poem so powerful is that it does not sensationalise. It educates. Ted Bundy was not frightening despite being educated and charming. He was frightening because of it. Because he understood exactly which masks the world trusted and he wore every single one of them perfectly.

    And the jump to Ed Gein is where the poem really earns its weight. Because just when you think you have found a pattern to recognise evil by, the poem reminds you that it shapeshifts. That it has no single face. No single method. No profile you can memorise and feel safe behind.

    This is uncomfortable writing. The best kind always is.

    • Humans can be exceptionally good at hiding their darkness. That is the scary part – if only they had ‘murderer’, ‘rapist’, ‘pedophile’, etc. on them. Tattooed on their foreheads!

  5. I read the book by Ann Rule.he use to help on a suicide crisis line.i guess I would scream during the night after reading it. I did not know that I was told. I no longer read those kind of books.
